The summer of 2003 will be long remembered in BC and Alberta as one of the worst forest fire seasons on record with wildfires raging out of control for weeks - devastating the communities, homes and livelihoods of thousands of citizens.
We prepared this issue of TELUS scope with solutions and practices to help our customers prepare for business disruptions. At TELUS, we take our own emergency operations planning very seriously. Little did we know that we would need to put those plans into action.
TELUS emergency teams worked around the clock to restore phone service to affected communities and as a result, more than 4,700 customers are back in touch with loved ones. The teams have also worked to ensure that there is no interruption to critical services such as the CBC emergency broadcast system, government operations centre and the Red Cross.
There has, and continues to be, an outpouring of support and humanitarian aid by our TELUS Community Connections volunteers. Thousands of vital supplies have been collected and transported throughout both provinces using TELUS trucks, vans and aircraft. As well, more than 14,000 long distance cards have been distributed to firefighters, volunteers and families.
We take tremendous pride in the efforts TELUS team members have made in restoring services and providing aid to the communities devastated by the force of Mother Nature.
