A major Alberta employer, investor and taxpayer
- TELUS is one of the largest private sector employers in the province. We employ approximately 8,300 highly skilled Albertans, who live and work in communities throughout the province.
- We paid $39 million in business and property taxes to Alberta provincial and municipal governments in 2004.
- Our strong executive leadership presence across Alberta includes more than 20 senior members of team TELUS who call the province home.
- TELUS Sourcing Solutions, the first company in Canada dedicated to providing alternative end-to-end human resource service delivery, opened its offices in Calgary in May 2004.
- We invested $2 billion in capital expenditures in Alberta between 2000 and 2004, including roll-out of advanced ADSL and 1X wireless networks.

As we proudly celebrate the province's 100th anniversary year, our investments and initiatives directly support each of the pillars in Alberta's 20-year strategic plan, reinforcing the drive to unleash innovation, lead in learning, compete in the global marketplace and keep Alberta the best place to live, do business or visit.
- TELUS team members contribute to charities of their choice through the annual TELUS Employee Charitable Giving Campaign. In 2004, they contributed $760,824 to charitable organizations across the province. This money was matched dollar for dollar by TELUS, for a total of $1,521,648.16.
- The TELUS Community Connections Volunteer Program connects TELUS team members and retirees to volunteer opportunities in their local communities and provides a financial grant to the team members' charity of choice. Last year, TELUS team members and retirees contributed more than 114,693 hours of community service to charitable organizations throughout Alberta and $126, 600 through Volunteer Involvement Fund grants.
- TELUS invested more than $4.3 million in events and community building activities in Alberta in 2004.
- TELUS is the proud supporter of Alberta's Promise, Kid's Kottage, and Success by 6. Non-profit organizations supported by TELUS include: the Edmonton Opera, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Theatre Calgary, Quest Theatre, TELUS CyberTales and Book Bags for Kids.
A proud supporter of youth and innovation
- TELUS is committed to promoting technological innovation and has invested in our children's future by supporting science centres across Canada. In April and May, 2005, TELUS announced 20 year partnerships and investments of $9 million for the Calgary Science Centre and $8.2M for the Edmonton Odyssium.
- In recognition of the partnership, the facilities will be renamed TELUS World of Science, Calgary and TELUS World of Science, Edmonton.
- Our investment in science centres in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Edmonton reflects our belief in making the future friendly for youth by fostering educational opportunities through the innovative use of technology.
Advancing the government's information, communication and technology goals
Investing in high-speed infrastructure
- On July 15, 2003, TELUS made telecom history in Alberta when it switched voice traffic over to the TELUS Next-Generation Network. One of the first companies in the world to deploy Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), we are eliminating the need for separate networks for voice, data and video.
- TELUS is committed to working with the Alberta Government in support of Alberta's SuperNet.
- "SuperNet's progress boosted by TELUS contribution", Government of Alberta News Release April 11, 2003.
- TELUS launched its first services over the Alberta SuperNet network since becoming an Alberta SuperNet Service Provider in September, 2004. The initial service launch included Internet, hosting and videoconferencing solutions.
Providing e.health solutions
TELUS has a comprehensive suite of e.health, telehealth and network services designed to assist our healthcare industry clients provide superior healthcare to Albertans. These capabilities include IT applications such as financial, logistical and clinical systems, in addition to custom solutions such as managed desktop and network applications.
- Last year, Capital Health Region and TELUS entered into a strategic technology alliance. For more information, please see the article New health care partnership is formed in Alberta in this edition of TELUS Scope.
- TELUS has also partnered with the Calgary Health Region consortium to use technology in ways that will reduce costs to the health care system and lead to better health care. For example, a new system compiles accurate, up to date information, allowing the Region to identify where staff shortages exist that directly affect patient care so that these shortages can be filled immediately, for example by qualified MRI technologists, ultrasound technicians and nurses.
Leading in learning - helping Alberta students learn

- TELUS Learning Connection (TLC) is an award-winning initiative, supported and sponsored by an educational alliance that includes TELUS. TLC provides professional development and online teaching resources and tools for the province's teachers. It has provided Internet training for more than 17,000 teachers and is in its eighth consecutive year of service to kindergarten to grade 12 educators. The TLC website features more than 18,000 pages of teacher-support material and receives an average of three million hits a month from users in more than 20 countries worldwide. The TLC is the 2004 recipient of the National Staff Development Council (NSDC) "Exemplary Use of Technology for Staff Development" award, which recognizes outstanding utilization of technology that contributes to the field of staff development.
